Greenfield

Recently in Indonesia, the number of Greenfield sites being destroyed has been showing a significant increase. A recent example is the Gandaria city which opened earlier this year. Here in Jakarta, the increasing constructions of malls have destroyed many greenfield sites during the process. In addition to the many malls already built, a huge project is being carried out by the Lippo group to build St. Morits. This project is not of the biggest project that will include Shopping malls, apartments and many recreational sites. Previously the land was a greenfield site filled with tress that provides healthy air for the surrounding. However now, the fresh air has transformed into dirty pollution. Do the bad smells caused by the construction win over the beauty of nature?

  1. Good topic choice. I actually went to Gandaria City for the first time yesterday if you can believe that. I live in Bintaro and I am seeing the destruction of greenfield sites here too as more housing developments and shopping plazas are created. Do I really need a Carrefour, Total, Giant and Lotte Mart all within walking distance from one another? Isn't one enough or two at the most? Doesn't green matter to anyone or do we simply numb ourselves to the destruction of our natural environments by going to malls and spending money? Also, a lot of these major construction projects are actually causing Jakarta to sink. This is not good considering that Jakarta suffers from floods and is at or below see level to begin with.
